MechaPaint / PBR Materials

PBR MATERIALS

A whole material library, one click from the model

The PBR Material window is a browser of ready-made surfaces built into MechaPaint. Search it, pick a resolution, and put rock, rust, fabric or concrete onto your model in one click, or load it onto the brush and paint the surface on by hand.

THE BROWSER

Open the window, find a surface, use it

The Material Depot button in the toolbar opens the browser. Every material in it is CC0 1.0, public domain, yours to use in anything, commercial work included. MechaPaint fetches them from ambientCG.com and polyhaven.com, with more archives joining them. What matters is that it puts a believable surface on your model in one click, which is the part I spent the time on.

01

Browse and search

Tiles you can search by name and filter by site. Click one and the detail strip names the material, its author, where it came from, its license, and which maps it carries.

02

Pick your resolution

1K, 2K and 4K, each showing its download size in megabytes before you commit. Downloads run with a progress bar and a Cancel, and the window stays live so you can keep browsing.

03

Fill Layer

Hands the selected part the whole material at once. Color, roughness, metalness, normal, AO and height arrive as six real layers tied together as one group. Hide the group and the part goes back to bare. One undo takes all of it.

04

Use it on the brush

Load the material onto the brush and every stroke lays down color, bumps, roughness, metal and occlusion at once, wherever you paint. It projects at the same tile size Fill Layer uses, so a painted patch and a filled part match exactly.

THE DETAILS THAT KEEP IT TIDY

Built to be used a hundred times a project

01

Real world tile size

Apply projects the material onto the surface, so Tile size is a real size in model units rather than a count of repeats across the UVs. Auto reads each part's own dimensions and picks for you, and touching the slider hands control back to you.

02

Reapply without stacking

The layer carries the material's name, and that name is its identity. Filling a part with a material it already has rewrites that layer, so trying three roughness settings leaves you with one clean layer and every other part untouched.

03

Bring your own

Import Folder takes a material from anywhere else. Point it at an unzipped folder of plain PBR images from Fab, Megascans or any other source and MechaPaint works out which file is which map from their names. Drop a folder or a zip straight onto MechaPaint and it unzips it for you.

04

Credits, written for you

MechaPaint keeps a list of every downloaded material a project uses and who made it. It shows in the window, saves into the .mpaint project, and lands as a _Credits.txt beside your exported textures. CC0 asks for no attribution. The credits are there because somebody made these and gave them away.
