MechaPaint 2.0.9 Patch Notes
A whole toolbox for fixing scans, a Crater starting point, PolyShave that keeps your paint, and a leaf you can fold. Here is everything I added and improved since 2.0.8 on October 29.
v2.0.9 / November 2, 2026
Scan repair tools, Crater, and PolyShave that keeps your paint
Geometry tools for scans
- Smooth. Brush over lumpy scan noise and the surface relaxes under the brush. Quads, UVs and paint all stay exactly where they were. Keep Borders holds the open edges in place, and holding the brush still keeps smoothing.
- Scalpel. Draw a loop around anything sticking out of your model, like a stray fin or a floating sheet. On release the loop closes with a straight line, MechaPaint slices the mesh right along your lines, cuts the inside away and caps the hole with clean quads that carry the texture around it.
- Flattener. A box follows your pointer with one bright edge. Click and every point in the box slides over until it lines up exactly with that edge, across every part the box covers. The Push menu picks Left, Right, Up or Down. It is the fastest way I know to square off a scanned wall.
- Corners. Drag down the edge where two walls meet and it becomes a perfect 90 degree corner, floor corner included. MechaPaint shows the edge it found before you press, orange for an outside corner and cyan for an inside one.
- Mesh Pen. The first tool that adds geometry. Draw a line and it becomes a tube, or a flat Strap, built right into the scan part. Snap Ends lands each end on the surface, Shift draws straight, and Shift plus the scroll wheel twists a Strap to match the one it joins. A little gauge at the brush corner shows the thickness on screen.
- Mesh Patch. Paint over a hole in a scan and press Save. Bend To Fit curves the patch to meet the surface all the way round, and Weld stitches it in edge to edge so the part is watertight again, even on a scan that is one closed shell. The new faces get their own spot in the texture, ready to paint.
- Build Up. Brush over a part the scan made too thin, like a horse leg pinched to a stick, and it fattens back out. Front and back grow together. Hold Ctrl to slim a part down instead.
- Mesh Drag. Grab the points under the brush and pull them along a plane, with a soft falloff. Shift pulls straight out from the plane, and Esc puts everything back.
- Work planes. Mesh Pen, Mesh Patch and Mesh Drag can work on a plane facing you, or on a plane you set with three clicks, so your strokes land in the right spot from any view.
- Decimate. Click a part and every edge loop that can go without changing the shape is dissolved, two quads at a time, pass after pass. On a 10 by 10 grid you get one quad back. Max Error lets curved loops go too, up to the amount you allow, and 5-Sided Ends clears the loops that stop at a pole. My 400,000 triangle bench model dropped to about half in seven seconds.
- Level. Click three points on the floor, point the arrow Down, and the whole model turns so that floor is perfectly level. Plane On Floor, Center and Edge On X square a scan up to the grid. It is one undo step and saves with your project.
- Focus on 3 Points. A new button in the Focus flyout. Click three points and the camera looks straight at their plane.
- Geometry tools on any size model. Smooth, Scalpel, Flattener and Corners shade correctly on models stored in tiny units and on models exported inside out.
PolyShave
- Keep Texture. Shaved areas keep the paint that was under them. Each merged face carries the exact look of the faces it replaced, even on scan textures where every triangle is its own little island. It is on by default in More..., Texture, and undo brings back the pixels along with the mesh.
New starting point: Crater
- New Project, Crater. Start on a cratered plate in one click. Moon Surface, Mars Plain, Impact Site, Battlefield or Blank Plate, with hundreds of craters and a hero crater already in place.
- The Crater tool. Click to press a crater. Seven looks, from a fresh moon bowl to a complex crater with a central peak and terraces, an old worn crater, an oblique impact, a Mars rampart crater, a meteor crater and a shell hole. Size and Depth sit on the top bar in real world units.
- Live Edit. Move a slider and the last crater reshapes right where it is. More... holds every setting: bowl, peak, terraces, rim, ejecta, impact angle, rays, age and Scatter Many.
- Crater Ground. Fresh ejecta, bright rays and scorch marks are painted into their own layer, so you can paint over them freely.
Snow, Sand and Rust
- Custom Color for Snow and Sand. Pick any color, use your brush color, or choose a regolith preset: Moon, Mars, Desert or Earth. Match Crater Ground sets it to your crater plate in one click.
- Pick From Model. Click your model and Snow or Sand takes on the color right under the pointer.
- Regolith pattern. Sandstorm has a new moon dust pattern with tiny craters, rock bits and bright fragments. People love using Sandstorm on the moon, and now it looks the part.
- Rust breaks through the surface. With the new tick on the Rust Factory Model page, Grow on Model rusts the surface your model already has. The rust, chipped bare metal and streaks come through your own paint, in color, Rough, Metal, Normal and Height.
Leaf
- Leaves with veins. A stamped leaf now has a midrib down the middle and veins out to the edge, so it bends like a real leaf. Pick 2 to 24 veins.
- Fold and Droop. Crease the leaf along its midrib, and let it droop back toward the tip.
Import and export
- Pick TGA when you save. The Texture panel's Export... dialog lists PNG and TGA, so you can choose per export.
- iClone files. Drop an .iProp, .iAvatar or other iClone file and MechaPaint shows you how to bring it in as FBX, step by step.
- Imported FBX models stay on screen in every view, including the clay preview, on scans and models with empty materials.
Painting
- Shape brushes. Lasso Brush, Polygon Brush, Circle Brush and Rectangle Brush each have their own dock button. Draw the shape and it fills on release. A new Mode menu at the front of the top bar switches between them and the plain Brush.
- The Eyedropper picks the whole material. In PBR mode it picks Metal, Rough, AO and Height along with the color, so what you paint back matches what you picked.
- Brush preview in the air. The cursor ring shows your brush tip even when it is off the model, in your live color, material or gradient, with your opacity and rotation.
- The PBR channel bar follows the display. Turn the PBR display off anywhere and the channel bar folds away. Turn it on and the bar opens.
Viewing and speed
- Faster wireframe. Edits stay quick after you hide the wireframe, and undoing a weld updates just the area it touched.
- Smooth runs stroke after stroke with no wait in between.
- Retopo opens instantly on models that carry wire and guide overlays.
- Auspex Trium. The scale tool has a new name. Search still finds it by its old one.
